Old Fashioned Stuffed Cabbage Rolls

Stuffed cabbage are a classic comfort food found in many Eastern European and Middle Eastern kitchens. They’re usually made with cabbage leaves wrapped around a filling of meat, rice, and seasonings, then simmered in tomato sauce.

Simple Old-Fashioned Stuffed Cabbage Rolls

Ingredients

  • 1 large cabbage
  • 500 g ground beef or beef/pork mix
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 egg
  • Salt, pepper, garlic powder
  • Tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes

Basic steps

  1. Boil the cabbage briefly and peel off soft leaves.
  2. Mix meat, rice, onion, egg, and seasonings.
  3. Place filling in each leaf and roll tightly.
  4. Arrange in a pot and cover with tomato sauce.
  5. Simmer gently for about 1–1½ hours until tender.

  • Pickled vegetables
