🥩 Old-Fashioned Salisbury Steak
A classic comfort dish made with seasoned beef patties simmered in rich onion gravy—simple, hearty, and very tender.
Ingredients
For the patties:
- 500 g (1 lb) ground beef
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 1 small onion, finely grated or minced
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
For the gravy:
- 1 onion, sliced thin
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon flour (or cornstarch slurry)
- 1–2 tablespoons oil or butter
Instructions
1. Make the beef patties
- In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
- Shape into oval patties (like small steaks).
2. Brown the patties
- Heat oil in a pan.
- Cook patties for 3–4 minutes per side until browned (they don’t need to cook through yet).
- Remove and set aside.
3. Cook the onions
- In the same pan, add sliced onions.
- Cook until soft and golden.
4. Make the gravy
- Sprinkle flour over onions and stir (or add slurry).
- Slowly pour in beef broth while stirring.
- Add Worcestershire sauce.
- Simmer until slightly thickened.
5. Simmer everything together
- Return patties to the pan.
- Cover and simmer 15–20 minutes until fully cooked and tender.
🍽️ Serve with:
- Mashed potatoes
- Rice
- Buttered noodles
- Steamed vegetables
đź’ˇ Tips for extra tenderness
- Don’t overmix the beef mixture (keeps patties soft).
- Simmer gently—no high heat boiling.
- Let it rest in gravy for a few minutes before serving.
