Shepherd’s pie

Shepherd’s pie is a classic comfort dish made with seasoned meat and vegetables topped with creamy mashed potatoes and baked until golden.

Simple Shepherd’s Pie

Ingredients

For the filling

  • 500 g ground lamb or beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 1 cup peas
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 cup broth
  • Salt, pepper, garlic, herbs

For the topping

  • 4–5 potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • Butter
  • Milk
  • Salt and pepper

Directions

  1. Boil potatoes until soft, then mash with butter and milk.
  2. Cook onion and meat in a pan until browned.
  3. Add carrots, peas, tomato paste, broth, and seasonings. Simmer a few minutes.
  4. Spread the meat mixture into a baking dish.
  5. Top with mashed potatoes and smooth the surface.
  6. Bake at 200°C (400°F) for about 20–25 minutes until lightly golden.

Optional additions

  • Cheese on top
  • Corn instead of peas
  • Worcestershire sauce for deeper flavor

Serve hot with salad or steamed vegetables.
