  • ¼ tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

  2. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute.
  3. Slowly whisk in the milk until smooth.
  4. Simmer for 2–3 minutes until slightly thickened.
  5. Reduce heat to low.
  6. Stir in the cheese a handful at a time until melted and smooth.
  7. Season with garlic powder, salt, and pepper.

For Extra Flavor

Try adding:

  • diced jalapeños
  • a pinch of paprika
  • a splash of hot sauce
  • cooked bacon bits

Serving Suggestions

Pour over:

  • French fries
  • Nachos
  • baked potatoes
  • steamed vegetables

💡 Tips

  • Freshly grated cheese melts more smoothly than pre-shredded cheese.
  • If the sauce becomes too thick, whisk in a little extra milk.
  • Keep the heat low once the cheese is added to prevent graininess.

🧾 Bottom line

A simple homemade Cheese sauce takes about 10 minutes and gives you a rich, creamy topping that’s far better than most store-bought versions.
