Shepherd’s pie is a classic comfort dish made with seasoned meat and vegetables topped with creamy mashed potatoes and baked until golden.
Simple Shepherd’s Pie
Ingredients
For the filling
- 500 g ground lamb or beef
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, diced
- 1 cup peas
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 cup broth
- Salt, pepper, garlic, herbs
For the topping
- 4–5 potatoes, peeled and chopped
- Butter
- Milk
- Salt and pepper
Directions
- Boil potatoes until soft, then mash with butter and milk.
- Cook onion and meat in a pan until browned.
- Add carrots, peas, tomato paste, broth, and seasonings. Simmer a few minutes.
- Spread the meat mixture into a baking dish.
- Top with mashed potatoes and smooth the surface.
- Bake at 200°C (400°F) for about 20–25 minutes until lightly golden.
Optional additions
- Cheese on top
- Corn instead of peas
- Worcestershire sauce for deeper flavor
Serve hot with salad or steamed vegetables.
