Turmeric
Turmeric is a bright yellow spice commonly used in South Asian cooking and traditional medicine. Its main active compound is curcumin.
Possible health effects
Research suggests turmeric/curcumin may have:
- Anti-inflammatory effects
- Antioxidant properties
- Mild help with some joint pain in certain people
But many online claims are exaggerated. There is not strong evidence that turmeric can cure major diseases like cancer, diabetes, or Alzheimer’s.
How people use it
- Curries and rice dishes
- Tea or “golden milk”
- Smoothies
- Supplements
Important things to know
- Curcumin is absorbed poorly on its own.
- Black pepper (piperine) can increase absorption.
- Large supplement doses may cause stomach upset or interact with medicines.
Use caution if you:
- Take blood thinners
- Have gallbladder disease
- Have kidney stone problems
- Take diabetes medications
Simple turmeric drink
- 1 cup warm milk or plant milk
- ½ tsp turmeric
- Pinch of black pepper
- Optional: honey or cinnamon
