A slow cooker whole chicken is an easy “set-it-and-forget-it” meal that comes out juicy, tender, and full of flavor with very little effort.
Slow cooker chicken
🍗 Ingredients
- 1 whole chicken (1.5–2 kg)
- 1 onion (quartered)
- 3–5 garlic cloves
- 1 lemon (optional, halved)
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp dried thyme or rosemary
- 2 tbsp butter or olive oil
- ½ cup chicken broth or water
👩🍳 Instructions
1. Prep the chicken
- Remove giblets if inside
- Pat chicken dry (helps flavor stick better)
2. Season well
- Rub chicken with butter or oil
- Season inside and outside with salt, pepper, paprika, and herbs
3. Add to slow cooker
- Place onions and garlic at the bottom
- Put chicken on top
- Add lemon inside cavity (optional)
- Pour in broth
4. Cook
- Low: 6–7 hours (best texture)
- High: 3–4 hours
- Cook until internal temp reaches 75°C / 165°F
5. Optional crisp finish
Slow cookers don’t brown the skin, so:
- Place chicken under broiler for 5–10 minutes
- Or in oven at high heat until golden
🍽️ Serving ideas
- Roast potatoes or rice
- Steamed vegetables
- Shredded for sandwiches or wraps
- With gravy made from juices
🔥 Tips for best results
- Use a smaller chicken for even cooking
- Don’t add too much liquid (chicken releases its own juices)
- Rest 10 minutes before carving
