🥩 Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

Ingredients

For the steaks:

  • 500g (1 lb) ground beef
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 small onion (finely grated or minced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp mustard (optional but recommended)
  • Salt & black pepper
  • 2 tbsp oil (for frying)

For the onion gravy:

  • 1 large onion (sliced)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper to taste

🍳 Instructions

1. Make the patties

  • Mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and pepper.
  • Shape into oval “steak” patties.

2. Brown the steaks

  • Heat oil in a pan.
  • Sear patties 3–4 minutes per side until browned.
  • Remove and set aside (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet).

3. Make onion gravy

  • In the same pan, melt butter.
  • Add sliced onions and cook until soft and golden (5–8 minutes).
  • Stir in flour and cook 1 minute.
  • Slowly add beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps.
  • Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.

4. Simmer together

  • Return steaks to the pan.
  • Cover and simmer 10–15 minutes until cooked through and gravy thickens.

🍽️ Serve with:

Mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles.
