All you need is a dishwasher tablet! The oven will be like new again

That headline is overstated. A dishwasher tablet can help remove some baked-on grease, but it won’t make every oven “like new”, and it’s not appropriate for all oven surfaces.

Here’s what you should know:

It can work for:

  • Loosening grease and burnt-on food on some enamel-coated oven interiors and glass oven doors.

Use it carefully:

  1. Wear rubber gloves.
  2. Slightly dampen a dishwasher tablet with warm water (don’t let it dissolve completely).
  3. Gently rub greasy areas with light pressure.
  4. Wipe the residue away with a damp cloth.
  5. Rinse thoroughly so no detergent remains.

Avoid using this method on:

  • Self-cleaning oven interiors with special coatings.
  • Aluminum or delicate finishes.
  • Heating elements or fans.
  • Painted or easily scratched surfaces.

The tablet contains detergents and mild abrasives, so aggressive scrubbing can damage some finishes.

If your oven has heavy, baked-on grease, a cleaner specifically designed for ovens (used according to the manufacturer’s instructions) or your oven’s built-in self-cleaning cycle—if it has one—is usually more effective.

So the claim that “all you need is a dishwasher tablet” is an oversimplification. It can be a useful cleaning trick in some cases, but it’s not a universal or risk-free solution.
