Salisbury steak with onion gravy
A comforting, budget-friendly dinner featuring seasoned beef patties smothered in a rich onion gravy.
Ingredients
For the Steaks
- 1½ lbs (680 g) ground beef
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
For the Onion Gravy
- 2 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
1. Make the Steaks
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
- Mix gently and form into 4–6 oval patties.
2. Brown the Patties
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
- Cook the patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned.
- Transfer to a plate (they do not need to be fully cooked through yet).
3. Prepare the Onion Gravy
- In the same skillet, melt the butter.
- Add the sliced onions and cook for 10–15 minutes until soft and golden.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir for 1 minute.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth.
- Add Worcestershire sauce and simmer until thickened, about 3–5 minutes.
4. Finish the Dish
- Return the patties to the skillet.
- Spoon gravy over them.
- Cover and simmer for 10–15 minutes, until the patties are cooked through and tender.

Tips
- For extra flavor, add sliced mushrooms to the gravy.
- If the gravy gets too thick, thin it with a little additional beef broth.
