A comforting, budget-friendly dinner featuring seasoned beef patties smothered in a rich onion gravy.

Ingredients

For the Steaks

  • 1½ lbs (680 g) ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

For the Onion Gravy

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

1. Make the Steaks

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  2. Mix gently and form into 4–6 oval patties.

2. Brown the Patties

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Cook the patties for 4–5 minutes per side until browned.
  3. Transfer to a plate (they do not need to be fully cooked through yet).

3. Prepare the Onion Gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt the butter.
  2. Add the sliced onions and cook for 10–15 minutes until soft and golden.
  3. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir for 1 minute.
  4. Gradually whisk in the beef broth.
  5. Add Worcestershire sauce and simmer until thickened, about 3–5 minutes.

4. Finish the Dish

  1. Return the patties to the skillet.
  2. Spoon gravy over them.
  3. Cover and simmer for 10–15 minutes, until the patties are cooked through and tender.

Serving Suggestions

  • Creamy mashed potatoes
  • Buttered egg noodles
  • Steamed green beans
  • Roasted carrots

Tips

  • For extra flavor, add sliced mushrooms to the gravy.
  • If the gravy gets too thick, thin it with a little additional beef broth.
  • Leftovers reheat very well and often taste even better the next day.
