New method: colonoscopy will no longer be an invasive examination. (1/2)

That headline is misleading. At present, a standard colonoscopy remains an invasive procedure because it involves inserting a flexible camera into the colon.

What the headline is likely referring to is the development of less-invasive screening options that may reduce the need for colonoscopy in some people:

  • Stool DNA tests and fecal immunochemical tests (FIT) can screen for signs of colorectal cancer at home. If the result is positive, a colonoscopy is usually needed to investigate further.
  • CT colonography (virtual colonoscopy) uses a CT scan to create images of the colon. It is less invasive than a traditional colonoscopy but still requires bowel preparation and inflation of the colon with air or carbon dioxide. If abnormalities are found, a standard colonoscopy is needed to remove polyps or take biopsies.
  • Researchers are also studying blood tests, capsule endoscopy (a swallowable camera), and AI-assisted screening, but these are not replacements for standard colonoscopy in most situations.

So, while screening methods are becoming less invasive, no widely adopted new method has eliminated the need for traditional colonoscopy when doctors need to diagnose disease, remove polyps, or collect tissue samples.

If you have an average risk of colorectal cancer, ask your healthcare provider which screening option is most appropriate for your age, medical history, and risk factors.
