A month before a heart attack, your feet warn you of these six signs.

That headline is misleading. There are no six foot signs that reliably predict a heart attack one month in advance.

However, some foot and leg symptoms can reflect underlying heart or blood vessel disease, which may increase the risk of a future heart attack.

Possible signs include:

  • Swollen feet or ankles: Can be a sign of Heart failure, but swelling is also commonly caused by vein problems, kidney disease, certain medications, or prolonged standing.
  • Pain in the legs when walking that improves with rest: This may indicate Peripheral artery disease, a condition caused by narrowed arteries that is associated with a higher risk of heart attack and stroke.
  • Cold, pale, or bluish feet: May suggest poor circulation.
  • Slow-healing sores on the feet: Often related to poor circulation or diabetes, both of which increase cardiovascular risk.
  • Numbness or tingling: More commonly caused by diabetes or nerve disorders than by impending heart attack.

Actual warning signs of a heart attack

A heart attack most often causes symptoms such as:

  • Chest pain, pressure, tightness, or heaviness.
  • Pain that may spread to the arm, shoulder, neck, jaw, or back.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Cold sweats.
  • Nausea or vomiting.
  • Lightheadedness or fainting.
  • Unusual fatigue, especially in the days or weeks beforehand (more commonly reported by women).

When to get emergency help

If you or someone else has symptoms that suggest a heart attack—especially chest pain lasting more than a few minutes, severe shortness of breath, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw—call your local emergency services immediately.

The bottom line is that your feet cannot reliably warn you that a heart attack is one month away. While some foot symptoms can point to circulation problems or other conditions that deserve medical attention, they are not specific predictors of an impending heart attack.
