Eye floaters are tiny shapes that seem to drift across your vision — like dots, threads, cobwebs, or squiggles. They’re often easier to notice when looking at a bright background like the sky or a white wall.
They usually happen because the gel inside the eye changes with age and forms tiny clumps that cast shadows on the retina.
What you can do:
- Moving your eyes up and down may shift floaters out of your direct view.
- Regular eye exams can help monitor eye health.
- Many floaters are harmless and become less noticeable over time.
See an eye doctor quickly if floaters appear suddenly along with:
- Flashes of light
- A dark curtain or shadow in vision
- Sudden vision loss
- A large increase in floaters
Those symptoms can sometimes signal a retinal tear or another serious eye problem.
