Does anyone know what kind of insect this is? I just found it on my son’s head…

That kind of post is usually trying to get attention or help quickly—but without seeing the insect, it’s impossible to identify safely or accurately.

If someone truly finds an insect on a child’s head, the most common possibilities are:

🪳 Most likely culprits

  • Head lice (very common in children)
  • Small flying insects (like gnats or mosquitoes)
  • Tiny beetles or random outdoor insects that got into hair

Head lice are usually:

  • very small (sesame seed size)
  • grayish or tan
  • move quickly through hair
  • often accompanied by itching

🧠 What to do right away (safe steps)

If this happened:

  1. Remove the insect carefully
  2. Check the scalp under bright light
  3. Look for:
    • more insects
    • tiny white “eggs” stuck to hair (nits)
  4. Wash hair with regular shampoo
  5. Wash pillowcases, hats, and bedding

⚠️ When to be more concerned

  • Persistent itching
  • Multiple insects or eggs found
  • Red bumps or scalp irritation

🚫 Important

Don’t panic or assume something dangerous—most insects found in hair are harmless or lice, which are treatable and very common in school-age kids.

If you want, you can describe what it looked like (size, color, whether it was moving fast or clinging to hair), and I can help narrow it down more accurately.
