Here’s how to clean your refrigerator’s waterproof seal in 5 minutes.

The waterproof seal around a refrigerator door is usually called the door gasket. Keeping it clean helps the door close properly, improves energy efficiency, and can prevent mold and odors.

Clean a refrigerator gasket in about 5 minutes

What you’ll need

  • Warm water
  • Mild dish soap
  • Soft cloth or sponge
  • An old toothbrush or soft brush
  • Dry towel

Steps

  1. Mix a cleaning solution
    • Add a few drops of dish soap to a bowl of warm water.
  2. Wipe the surface
    • Dip a cloth in the solution and wipe the entire gasket, including the folds.
  3. Clean the grooves
    • Use a soft toothbrush to gently scrub inside the creases where crumbs, dust, and moisture collect.
  4. Remove soap residue
    • Wipe the gasket with a clean, damp cloth.
  5. Dry thoroughly
    • Use a dry towel to remove moisture from the gasket and folds.

For mold or stubborn grime

  • Use a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 1 part water.
  • Apply it to the affected area, let it sit for a minute or two, then wipe clean and dry.

Quick maintenance tip

After cleaning, inspect the gasket for cracks, tears, or areas that no longer seal tightly. A damaged gasket can allow cold air to escape, making the refrigerator work harder and increasing energy use.

Cleaning the gasket every month or two is usually enough to keep it in good condition and help your refrigerator run efficiently.
