Warning signs of high blood sugar?

This is a good question, but online “warning signs” lists often get exaggerated. High blood sugar (hyperglycemia) can sometimes cause symptoms—but early on it may be mild or unnoticed.

Here are the common, medically recognized signs:

Early or moderate high blood sugar

  • Increased thirst
  • Frequent urination (especially at night)
  • Dry mouth
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Blurred vision
  • Headaches

More concerning or prolonged high blood sugar

  • Slow-healing cuts or wounds
  • Frequent infections (skin, gums, urinary tract)
  • Unexplained weight loss (more common in type 1 diabetes)
  • Increased hunger
  • Tingling or numbness in hands or feet

Severe high blood sugar (needs urgent attention)

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Confusion or difficulty concentrating
  • Fruity-smelling breath (in diabetic ketoacidosis)
  • Deep, rapid breathing
  • Extreme weakness or drowsiness

Important reality check

  • Many people with early high blood sugar feel nothing at all
  • Symptoms vary depending on how fast blood sugar rises and overall health
  • The only reliable way to confirm it is with a blood glucose test or HbA1c test

When to take it seriously

If symptoms are:

  • persistent
  • getting worse
  • combined with risk factors (family history, overweight, inactivity)

…it’s worth getting tested.

Bottom line

These symptoms are signals, not a diagnosis. Viral posts often make them sound more dramatic than they are, but real assessment always requires a simple medical test, not guesswork from symptoms alone.
