Cajun Shrimp and Grits
A rich Southern favorite featuring spicy Cajun-seasoned shrimp served over creamy, buttery grits.
Ingredients (4 servings)
For the Grits
- 1 cup stone-ground or quick grits
- 4 cups chicken broth or water
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For the Shrimp
- 1 lb (450 g) large shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1 tbsp Cajun seasoning
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 4 slices bacon, chopped
- 1 small bell pepper, diced
- ½ onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp butter
- 2 green onions, sliced
- Lemon wedges for serving
Instructions
1. Cook the Grits
- Bring broth or water to a boil.
- Slowly whisk in the grits.
- Reduce heat and simmer, stirring occasionally, until creamy.
- Stir in butter, cheese (if using), salt, and pepper.
2. Prepare the Shrimp
- Toss shrimp with Cajun seasoning.
- Cook bacon in a large skillet until crisp; remove and set aside.
- Sauté bell pepper and onion in the bacon drippings for 3–4 minutes.
- Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
- Add shrimp and cook 1–2 minutes per side until pink.
- Stir in butter and the cooked bacon.
3. Assemble
- Spoon creamy grits into bowls.
- Top with the Cajun shrimp mixture.
- Garnish with green onions.
- Serve with lemon wedges.

- Add a splash of heavy cream to the grits for extra richness.
- Use Andouille Sausage alongside the bacon for a heartier version.
- Adjust the Cajun seasoning to control the heat level.
